2019 Watershed Symposium—Protecting and Restoring Tennessee’s Waterways with Watershed Management Plans

picture of watershed symposium flyerThe 7th Annual Watershed Symposium at UT, hosted by the UT's Watershed Faculty Consortium, was held March 26, 2019 from Noon-5pm.

Thanks to everyone who had a hand in making it a success. There were roughly 75 attendees, including students, invited guests, cooperating agencies, faculty, and staff. Ten posters displayed some of the great watershed-related work our academic community is doing, and eight of those were presented by students competing in the poster competition. The winners are listed below.

Dr. Sam Marshall provided a terrific opening address on watershed management plans and restoration projects. His presentation was followed by presentations from three fantastic watershed projects. Finally our very own campus watershed protection efforts were demonstrated through the campus rainworks challenge projects.

And now, some specific notes of appreciation. Many thanks to Tim Gangaware and Joanne Logan for poster display set up and logistics; Jennifer Franklin for leading the poster judging; John Schwartz for assembling and communicating with the speakers and for emceeing; Ian McRae for bringing in the campus rainworks students and for poster judging; the Herbert College of Agriculture and John Stier for supporting the poster competition awards, the Institute for a Secure and Sustainable Environment for providing afternoon refreshments, and to all of you who joined us for the afternoon and encouraged students to participate.

Poster Winners:

  • First Place – Emily Craig (Faculty Advisor: Liem Tran)
  • Second Place – Whitney Lisenbee (Faculty Advisor: Jon Hathaway)
  • Third Place – Sarah Dowda and Logan Hysen (Faculty Advisor: Ian McRae)
